Clair is a chat-based collaborative conversational agent that occasionally intervenes in student dialogue using reflective prompts (aka ‘talk moves’), deeply rooted in learning sciences, to foster productive student dialogue.

Students and teachers across diverse educational institutions are collaborating in research studies to evaluate Clair in classrooms worldwide.

Clair Mode: “APT-Base”
(Classroom Trials completed in September 2022 – January 2023)
Clair’s first prototype included a suite of 8 academically productive talk (APT) moves. This mode has been tested in classrooms in Brazil, the Netherlands, Germany, and Taiwan, with several positive effects reported.

Clair’s second prototype includes a new suite of 6 talk moves (see them in the slideshow above). This mode has also been tested in classrooms, and a recent study points to better results compared to the previous mode.

Voice Interface

We developed a voice interface where students discuss face-to-face, and Clair is able to trigger interventions in this multi-speaker setting. This initiative has been called MAI and is developed in partnership with the University of Oulu.
